CBSE Class 12 Chemistry Important Chapters and Weightage 2026–27
CBSE's 2026–27 Chemistry curriculum provides a theory-course structure with marks for each of the ten listed units. These official marks are useful for planning time, but they do not make any chapter safe to skip.
This guide separates official information from predictions and shows how to combine marks, prerequisite gaps and recent test evidence when choosing the next revision block.
Official Class XII theory marks
The current curriculum assigns 70 marks to theory and 30 marks to practical work. The table below reproduces the Class XII unit marks from CBSE's Chemistry (043) curriculum.
| Unit | Marks |
|---|---|
| Solutions | 7 |
| Electrochemistry | 9 |
| Chemical Kinetics | 7 |
| d- and f-Block Elements | 7 |
| Coordination Compounds | 7 |
| Haloalkanes and Haloarenes | 6 |
| Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers | 6 |
| Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids | 8 |
| Amines | 6 |
| Biomolecules | 7 |
| Total | 70 |
What 'important' should mean
A useful priority combines official marks with the student's dependency gaps and error history. Electrochemistry carries the largest single listed total, but a student should not infer that every paper will distribute questions identically or that six-mark units can be omitted.
- Coverage: every prescribed unit needs a first complete pass.
- Dependency: repair concepts that block several later questions.
- Evidence: give extra time to errors repeated across school tests and mocks.
- Retention: revisit high-recall content through short spaced sessions.
- Exam readiness: practise mixed, timed questions after chapter work.
Plan by the kind of thinking required

| Cluster | Units | Core practice |
|---|---|---|
| Physical | Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics | Set up equations, show units, interpret results and mix calculation with concepts. |
| Inorganic | d- and f-Block, Coordination Compounds | Connect trends, colours, structures, nomenclature and explanations. |
| Organic | Haloalkanes, Alcohols/Phenols/Ethers, Carbonyl compounds, Amines | Build reaction maps with reagents, conditions, products and reasoning. |
| Biomolecules | Biomolecules | Use precise structures, classifications and functions with retrieval practice. |
A balanced weekly allocation
- Use two longer blocks for the highest current gap, regardless of whether it is the largest unit.
- Use one physical-Chemistry block for mixed calculations and interpretation.
- Use two shorter retrieval blocks for inorganic facts and organic reactions.
- Use one timed mixed set covering units already completed.
- Use one correction block to retry the week's errors without notes.
Avoid common weightage mistakes
- Do not convert one sample paper's chapter distribution into a guaranteed blueprint.
- Do not add unofficial deleted topics to the plan; verify scope in the current curriculum.
- Do not spend all revision time on the nine-mark unit.
- Do not ignore the separate 30-mark practical while planning the year.
- Do not count reading or highlighting as evidence that a chapter is exam ready.
Measure readiness chapter by chapter
| Checkpoint | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Recall | Key formulae, reagents, observations and terms are available without prompts. |
| Reasoning | The student can explain why a method, trend or product applies. |
| Application | Unfamiliar and mixed questions can be solved independently. |
| Presentation | Units, equations, conditions, structures and explanations are complete. |
| Retention | A similar question is still solved correctly after several days. |
Frequently asked questions
Which Class 12 Chemistry unit has the highest official marks?
In CBSE's 2026–27 course structure, Electrochemistry is listed for 9 marks and Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids for 8. Prepare all prescribed units because the curriculum does not make lower-mark units optional.
Is chapter-wise weightage guaranteed in the board paper?
Treat the published unit marks as planning information, not a promise about the exact questions or chapter split in one paper. Use the full official curriculum and SQP.
Is practical Chemistry included in these 70 marks?
No. The theory total is 70 marks; practical evaluation is a separate 30 marks in the official curriculum.
