Is Goethe B2 Enough for University?
Goethe B2 is enough only where your course accepts it for the way you are applying. CEFR is the European A1–C2 scale of language levels. A level describes language ability; it does not make every certificate carrying that level interchangeable. Read the programme page and its accepted-proof list together before booking an exam.
Compare the two TUM examples below, then make a requirement card for your own degree and application cycle. For a different university, read its own rules; a requirement from another course is not confirmation.
Official TUM programme and certificate pages checked 4 October 2026. Recheck the exact programme rules before applying.
Two bachelor’s degrees at TUM, two different checks
TUM also lists DSD II (the German Language Diploma, second level) with B2 in all four sections among its accepted German proofs. That is a named diploma with its own requirements: the B2 label alone does not turn a Goethe B2 certificate into DSD II. The list contains other examination routes and alternative evidence; use the current complete list rather than treating this table as exhaustive.

| Degree | What the official page says | Decision before choosing Goethe |
|---|---|---|
| Informatics Bachelor of Science | German instruction; language proof due by the application deadline. | Read the linked accepted-certificate list. The standard Goethe entry is C2, not B2. |
| Aerospace Bachelor of Science | English instruction, with German proof at least A2 also required by the application deadline. | TUM's certificate list accepts Goethe A2 or higher for this degree. Check English verification separately. |
Make a requirement card for each shortlisted degree
Swipe across the table to see all columns.
| Field | What to record | If it is unclear |
|---|---|---|
| Exact course and applicant route | Degree, campus, cycle and the category matching your previous qualification. | Ask admissions which route applies; a similar degree title is not confirmation. |
| Language of teaching | German, English or a stated mix; note any separate language condition. | Read the programme page, not just a search-result label. |
| Accepted proof | Full exam/diploma name, minimum overall and component results, alternatives and exemptions. | Ask whether your specific document is accepted. Do not substitute another exam yourself. |
| Evidence stage | Application, enrolment or a later stated stage; required document format. | Ask whether a pending result is allowed and obtain the answer in writing. |
| Dates and availability | Recipient deadline, local test registration, written/oral dates and expected result issue. | Leave unknown dates blank until the relevant institution or exam centre confirms them. |
A useful next step when you already hold Goethe B2
Suppose you hold Goethe B2 and shortlist the two degrees above. For Informatics, the accepted-proof check exposes a gap before you pay for another general B2 course: you need to identify a permitted certificate route and its timetable. For Aerospace, the stated Goethe A2-or-higher exception means the German certificate check has a different answer; you still need to meet English verification and every other admission requirement.
Now write one precise question to the admissions office: ‘For [degree and cycle], applying with [qualification and applicant route], is my [full certificate name, level and component results] accepted? By which stage and date must I supply it, and in what form?’ Keep the reply with the requirement card. Share identifying documents only through the institution's designated channel.
Choose language support after the document check
You may need to build German skills before attempting an accepted exam, or want everyday German for life alongside an English-taught degree. Those are valid learning goals, but optional everyday learning should remain separate from required admission proof.
TutorMax has a live Goethe-preparation programme. Discuss your current German, the target level and the accepted certificate before agreeing classes; current teaching scope, tutor fit and timetable must be confirmed. A requirement for Goethe C2 or a university entrance language test such as TestDaF or DSH needs an appropriate provider for that requirement. This page does not advertise those preparation services or imply that classes confer university eligibility.
