Find the class you are in during 2026–27
R3 means the third language; Bhartiya Bhashas are languages native to India. The notice counts English, French and German as non-native. For IX, page 3 retains the previous VIII combination. Match the complete situation, not only this summary.
| Current class | July clarification — brief summary | PDF section |
|---|---|---|
| Class X | Existing two-language system continues; no third language for this batch. | A · page 1 |
| Class IX | Three languages, normally two Bhartiya Bhashas. Existing English + French, for example, can continue under the one-time relaxation, adding one Bhartiya Bhasha as R3. | B · pages 2–3 |
| Class VII or VIII | Existing two-non-native-language learners have a transitional relaxation, continuing with one Bhartiya Bhasha through Class X. | C · page 3 |
| Class VI and subsequent VI batches | Two of three languages must be Bhartiya Bhashas; R3 has a Board examination when this cohort reaches Class X. | D · page 3 |
Read the cohort guidance →Sections A–D; keep the class and session visible when checking.
Check assessment separately from subject choice
Current IX and VII/VIII transitional cohorts have school-assessed R3, not a Class X Board paper. A current IX student who does not qualify R3 still progresses to X in 2027–28 but must clear IX R3 there. R3 must be cleared for the pass certificate; school reassessment precedes the X result.
Ask the school to show you the assessment record that applies to your child. Put the required work, review date and contact person in a note. 'No Board paper' should not become 'nothing to complete' in your study plan.
Assessment conditions in the July notice →Read both pages 2 and 3, including certificate and reassessment conditions.
A school location or individual exception needs its own check
Page 4 specifies native-Indian-R3 exemptions for overseas CBSE schools and foreign returning students, plus CwSN and interstate-move provisions. Check their exact scope with your school.
Bring your situation to the school without assuming an exemption from a general news summary. Ask which provision it is applying, what confirmation it needs and how the approved combination will be recorded. This reference cannot decide an individual case.
Read the exception and migration provisions →Sections E and F; use the full wording with the school.
Take this short record to your school
This is an original checking aid, not a CBSE form. Fill what you already know and leave unknown fields marked 'to confirm'. Avoid changing a subject on the basis of a partially filled record.
| Write down | Question to confirm | Useful evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Current class and academic session | Which cohort section are you applying to my child? | The applicable notice section and the school's written guidance. |
| Previous and current language combination | Are we continuing the existing combination, and which language is recorded as R3? | Subject names, the school's confirmation and relevant school records. |
| School location or a possible exception | Does a specific provision apply, and what does the school need to verify it? | The school's answer; do not infer a blanket exemption. |
| Assessment and materials | What work, assessment and current resources does the school expect for each language? | Its assessment plan and actual book/resource list. |
| An unresolved difference | This news article and this notice seem different. Which current instruction are you following? | The source link and date of the school's clarification. |
Make a manageable plan after the route is clear
Once the school confirms the combination and materials, list what is already going well and one task that needs support. Use a recent school assignment as evidence rather than assuming that a policy change means a child must restart the language.
Keep administrative questions with the school and teaching questions with the teacher. For example, 'Which language is R3?' needs a school answer; 'My child cannot yet understand the instructions in this assignment' can guide a teaching discussion.
If you want additional school-language support, bring the board, grade, confirmed subject and material list. Review the relevant current options below and confirm their fit. A CBSE/ICSE school-language course is different from an external exam-preparation course, and it does not authorize a subject change.
School French options →Check the offered CBSE/ICSE route and grade against your child's materials.
School German options →Confirm current grade and syllabus fit before discussing extra teaching.
School Spanish options →Relevant only if the school has confirmed this subject and suitable support is offered.
Keep the notice date with your decision
This reference uses the July clarification. The May circular is earlier context; read the later cohort guidance before applying a broad summary from that earlier announcement. Check the academic circular index for a later relevant update and ask your school about current instructions.
Save the confirmed combination and materials in one place. Reopen the record if the school issues a changed instruction, your child moves school or you are planning the next academic session. Do not simply carry a dated cohort summary into another year's subject choice.
Current CBSE academic circular index →Look for later language-policy guidance before acting.
Earlier May language circular →Historical context; use the July clarification for the cohort checks above.
Questions you might have
Should I change French or German after reading a headline?
Not from a headline alone. Current Class X retains two languages; other cohorts have different provisions. Confirm the combination and school instructions before changing a subject.
Can a DELF or Goethe course replace school assessment?
An external exam or preparation course does not replace the school's approved subject route and assessment. Choose school-language support using the confirmed board, grade and materials.
What should I do if the school and a news summary disagree?
Bring the exact source and date to the school. Ask for the current instruction it is applying and record the answer; a general summary cannot decide an individual case.
