Build revision around the obstacle, not just the chapter
For example, a student who can solve x² − 5x + 6 = 0 but cannot turn a word problem into an equation needs modelling practice. Another student who forms the equation correctly but writes roots −2 and −3 needs a factor-to-root sign check. Both errors belong to quadratics; they should not receive the same homework.

Confirm the Maths route before choosing a paper
Ask the school to confirm Mathematics Standard (041) or Mathematics Basic (241), the recorded choice and any school deadline for corrections. Attempt a relevant sample-paper section and discuss the actual working with the Maths teacher. A comparison of difficulty should not become a promise of an easier score or a decision based only on one test.
For Class XI eligibility, CBSE's circular of 27 May 2025 permitted Basic students to take Mathematics (041) subject to the school head's assessment of aptitude and ability. The circular also says this permission ceases once the new scheme under NCF-SE recommendations is implemented. Ask the school which current rule applies to the student's cohort; this is not a permanent unconditional entitlement.
- Write the future subjects being considered, without assuming a career choice is final.
- Bring recent independent work, including unfamiliar questions, to the discussion.
- Ask for the current subject-allocation rule and decision process in writing.
- Practise the paper matching the confirmed entry; use the other level only for a clearly identified learning purpose.
How the exam is structured
The CBSE Class 10 Maths assessment is 80 marks of board theory paper plus 20 marks of internal assessment held through the year (periodic tests, portfolio, and practical/lab work as prescribed). The theory paper mixes MCQs, short-answer, long-answer, and case-study questions, with the exact split published each year in CBSE's official sample paper — which is why the sample paper, not any guidebook, should anchor your final-month practice.
The syllabus, unit by unit
Use the current CBSE curriculum for scope and unit allocations. The outline below is a navigation aid; it does not substitute for the official topic list.
- Number Systems — fundamental theorem of arithmetic and irrationality proofs.

Official 2026–27 sample papers are now available
CBSE released separate 2026–27 Sample Question Papers and Marking Schemes for Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic on 21 September 2026. Use the paper matching the student's registration. Attempt it under the stated conditions before opening the marking scheme, then convert every lost mark into a concept, method, reading, time or presentation correction.
The assessment scheme is unchanged from 2025–26, according to CBSE's release notification. The current PDFs still matter because they show the live instructions, section structure and marking expectations for the 2027 board examination.
A term-by-term study plan
- During teaching: work through the prescribed material and explain the method behind each independent solution.
- During consolidation: mix newer chapters with earlier ones and repair prerequisites that block several topics.
- During paper practice: follow current official conditions when enough content has been taught; mark and repair before increasing volume.
- In the final month: combine error-log reattempts with mixed coverage, formula recall, proof reasoning and rest.
When individual Maths support may help
One-to-one teaching can be useful when the learner needs a different pace, help with specific prerequisites or feedback on their own working. A well-matched group can also help students practise and discuss methods. Choose from the learner's needs and the teacher's response to actual work, not a guaranteed score claim.

Should my child take Standard or Basic Maths?

How much of the paper comes from the sample paper pattern?

Build independent chapter work throughout teaching. Introduce timed sections when their content has been taught, and full papers when enough of the course is covered. Choose the timing from readiness and the school calendar rather than one fixed number of weeks.
