DELE A1 Exam Guide: Format, Tasks, Scoring and Preparation

DELE A1 certifies that a candidate can handle basic personal information, familiar everyday expressions and simple interaction when the other person speaks clearly and cooperatively. It is a specific exam level, so preparation should focus on the A1 tasks rather than generic Spanish exercises alone.

This guide uses the current Instituto Cervantes A1 structure. Confirm the sitting, centre, fee and deadline in the linked India guide before registering, then use the official model paper to diagnose each skill.

DELE A1 exam format

The oral test may be scheduled on the official written-exam day or on an immediately adjacent day, depending on the examination centre. Follow the centre's reporting instructions rather than assuming all four papers happen together.

What A1 candidates need to practise

A1 accuracy is useful, but the task must also be completed. A memorised introduction does not prepare a candidate to answer an unexpected follow-up or recover after missing a word.

  • Reading: identify practical information in short notices, messages and simple everyday texts without translating every word.
  • Listening: recognise names, numbers, places, times and familiar intentions across short recordings.
  • Writing: complete short interaction tasks with the requested personal details and a clear response to each prompt.
  • Speaking: give a personal presentation, speak briefly on a prepared topic and respond to the interviewer in a simple conversation.

How the DELE A1 pass rule works

Each paper is worth 25 points. Reading and writing form one 50-point scoring group; listening and speaking form the other. A candidate needs at least 30 points in each group. A very strong reading score therefore cannot compensate for an unsuccessful listening-and-speaking group.

Use the official model paper as a diagnostic

Instituto Cervantes provides an A1 model exam, listening audio, answer keys, answer-sheet models and an exam guide. Attempt the receptive papers under time, then perform the writing and speaking prompts without a script. The result should produce four separate skill notes rather than one overall percentage.

A practical A1 preparation cycle

Do not choose a fixed number of preparation weeks without checking the starting level. Someone who already handles basic Spanish needs a different plan from someone beginning from zero.

Common A1 preparation mistakes

  • Learning isolated word lists without practising how the words appear in a task.
  • Writing a memorised paragraph that does not answer every part of the prompt.
  • Stopping during the oral test after one unfamiliar question instead of asking for repetition or responding with simpler language.
  • Ignoring spelling, numbers and time expressions that carry essential information.
  • Taking full mock exams repeatedly without correcting the underlying language gap.

Frequently asked questions

Is DELE A1 for complete beginners?

A1 is the first DELE level, but the exam still requires the candidate to understand and produce basic Spanish across reading, listening, writing and speaking. Take a model-paper diagnostic before registering.

How long is the DELE A1 exam?

The written papers total 95 minutes: 45 reading, 25 listening and 25 writing. The oral paper lasts 10 minutes after 10 minutes of preparation and may be scheduled separately by the centre.

What score is needed to pass DELE A1?

You need at least 30/50 in reading plus writing and at least 30/50 in listening plus speaking.

Does the DELE A1 diploma expire?

No. A DELE diploma has indefinite validity, though the institution receiving it decides which level and evidence it accepts.
