DELE vs SIELE: Which Spanish Exam Should You Take?

DELE awards a permanent diploma when you pass a chosen language level. SIELE gives a score with a certificate or report valid for five years. Both refer to CEFR, the European A1–C2 scale of language levels. Start with the organisation that will receive your evidence: confirm the exact test, level, modality (all skills or a selected combination) and document it accepts.

If you need evidence by an application deadline, check the sitting before booking. DELE results take about two months, except May and November at about three months; SIELE's published notification window is at most three weeks. The worked schedule below shows how to check timing without treating an approximate result window as a promise.

Results guidance and worldwide calendar checked 4 October 2026 with Instituto Cervantes. Confirm local seats and recipient rules separately.

Ask for the exact requirement before choosing the faster test

Send the receiving organisation a precise question before paying: ‘For my intended application, do you accept DELE, SIELE Global or a specific SIELE modality? What level or score is required, must every skill meet a minimum, and by what date must you receive which result document?’ Keep the written reply with the application instructions. A general statement that an organisation accepts Spanish certificates may not answer these details.

The recipient explicitly requires DELE B2Use that requirement; a faster SIELE result does not automatically replace it.
The recipient accepts either with stated thresholdsCompare the required skill profile, available dates, result timing and format.
Only some skills are neededAsk whether the specific partial modality is accepted; do not assume any SIELE report is sufficient.

When DELE may fit better

  • The receiving institution explicitly asks for a DELE diploma or a particular DELE level.
  • You want a credential with indefinite validity and can work toward a defined pass threshold.
  • You need certification at C2, which sits outside SIELE's reported A1–C1 range.
  • You prefer to prepare for one selected CEFR level rather than tasks spanning a range of levels.

When SIELE may fit better

SIELE's flexibility does not make it universally interchangeable with DELE. Acceptance belongs to the university, employer or official process receiving the result.

  • The recipient accepts SIELE and you need results within its published maximum three-week window.
  • A numerical profile across skills is more useful than passing or failing one selected level.
  • You need an available authorized centre and date outside the fixed DELE convocations.
  • The accepted purpose needs only one of SIELE's independent skill combinations rather than the Global exam.

How SIELE Global is structured

Instituto Cervantes describes SIELE Global as a three-hour electronic exam plus a 15-minute break. Reading and listening are automatically scored; trained raters assess writing and speaking.

Ask these questions before registering

  • Which exam and minimum result does the receiving organization state in writing?
  • Must the evidence remain valid beyond five years?
  • Is a specific level required, or will a numerical score profile be accepted?
  • How quickly is the result needed, and does the published result window fit?
  • Which authorized centre, date and modality are actually available?
  • Does the candidate need all four skills or an accepted SIELE partial modality?

Will the result arrive before your evidence deadline?

For DELE, Cervantes gives approximately two months from the written exam, except May and November sittings, where the guidance is approximately three months. These are approximate issue windows, not guaranteed delivery dates. Add the receiving organisation's document and verification process before judging whether a sitting fits.

Test or sittingOfficial result guidanceWhat to confirm next
DELE, except May and NovemberApproximately two months after the written exam.Accepted evidence document, receipt deadline and any verification time.
DELE in May or NovemberApproximately three months after the written exam.Do not use the shorter general window for these sittings.
SIELEResults notification within a maximum of three weeks.Recipient must accept the exact exam or modality and required score; a faster result is not automatic substitution.

A hypothetical January deadline: why November DELE may not fit

Planning example only: imagine your recipient must receive accepted Spanish evidence by 31 January 2027. You are already registered for the general DELE B2 written exam on 14 November 2026. The published approximate three-month window points to mid-February 2027, beyond that hypothetical deadline. Do not build the application around an assumed January result.

Ask the recipient now whether it permits later evidence, a conditional process or a different named test. If it accepts SIELE, check its minimum scores, required skills, authorised-centre availability and document process before making a new booking. If it requires DELE and offers no later-proof route, a faster different exam does not solve that requirement.

Check the document handover before you pay

TutorMax's linked offer is DELE preparation, with tutor fit, timetable, scope and fees discussed before enrolment. If your accepted route is SIELE, identify support for that format rather than assuming a DELE plan is interchangeable. Bring the actual deadline and a recent writing or speaking attempt to a preparation discussion; there is no fixed promise to reach a level by an application date.

  • Record the exact accepted exam, level or scores and whether all four skills or a particular modality are required.
  • Ask whether the official electronically signed result certificate is accepted, or another document is required. Cervantes provides the DELE result certificate in the candidate area with a verification code.
  • Record separately: registration cutoff, written/oral appointments, approximate result issue, recipient receipt deadline and any verified processing time.
  • Keep unknown fields visible. A result window or an exam payment receipt does not prove the recipient has received valid evidence.
  • Check your current performance with official tasks. Choosing a compatible calendar does not establish readiness or a pass.

Frequently asked questions

Does SIELE expire?

Yes. Instituto Cervantes states that SIELE Global certificates and independent-modality reports are valid for five years.

Does a DELE diploma expire?

No. DELE has indefinite validity, although a receiving institution may set its own evidence requirements.

Which exam gives results faster?

Cervantes gives about two months for DELE results, except May and November sittings at about three months; SIELE results notification is within a maximum of three weeks. The recipient must accept the exact exam and evidence document. These windows do not include its processing time.

Can SIELE certify C2?

The official comparison describes SIELE as reporting performance across A1–C1. DELE offers separate adult exams through C2.

Is SIELE easier than DELE?

They report performance differently, so 'easier' is not a useful universal comparison. Choose based on the recipient's rule, required result, available time and current skill profile.
