DELE B1 and B2 Exam Guide: Differences, Format and Preparation

B1 and B2 are both independent-user levels, but they do not test the same depth. B1 focuses on managing familiar situations and communicating connected ideas. B2 requires stronger detail, argument, interaction and control across a wider range of texts and viewpoints.

Choose the level required by the receiving institution and supported by a diagnostic. Registering for B2 because it sounds more valuable can waste an exam sitting if current performance is closer to B1.

What the DELE B1 tasks demand

  • Reading and listening across familiar work, study, travel and everyday contexts, including different standard varieties of Spanish.
  • Writing one interaction task and one connected text that responds to the stated situation and purpose.
  • Giving a short prepared presentation and taking part in the follow-up conversation.
  • Describing a photograph, discussing it and handling a simulated dialogue without relying on memorised answers.

What becomes more demanding at B2

  • Reading requires efficient processing of denser texts and relationships between ideas, not only retrieval of obvious detail.
  • The writing paper is 20 minutes longer than B1 and expects more developed, appropriately organised responses.
  • In speaking, candidates evaluate proposals, imagine and discuss a situation from a photograph, and express views about survey data.
  • Responses need clearer argument, flexibility and control when the interviewer asks for justification or another perspective.

The pass rule is the same at B1 and B2

Each paper is worth 25 points. Reading combines with writing, and listening combines with speaking. Both 50-point groups need at least 30 points. This means a candidate should track group outcomes as well as individual-paper weaknesses.

How to decide between B1 and B2

QuestionWhat the answer changes
Which level does the recipient require? This is the first constraint; verify it directly.
Can you complete the official model under time?Use the correct pass groups, not an informal online placement score.
Can you sustain writing and speaking without a script?Productive performance often separates B1 readiness from B2 ambition.
How much repair is required before the sitting?Move the exam date or level when the diagnostic gap is not realistically repairable.

Prepare by task and scoring group

  • Complete one official model diagnostic and record time, accuracy and task completion separately.
  • For writing, get feedback on fulfilment, organisation, range and control, then rewrite the same response before starting another.
  • For speaking, record timed responses and practise follow-up interaction, clarification and justification.
  • Build listening work around the exact error: speaker identification, inference, detail, distractor or loss of concentration.
  • Recalculate both scoring groups after each mock cycle and direct the next week toward the group closest to the threshold.

Frequently asked questions

Is DELE B2 simply a harder version of B1?

It uses the same four broad skills and two-group pass rule, but has different tasks and greater demands on comprehension, argument, interaction and language control.

How long are the B1 and B2 exams?

B1 written papers total 170 minutes and its oral paper lasts 15 minutes after 15 minutes preparation. B2 written papers total 190 minutes and its oral paper lasts 20 minutes after 20 minutes preparation.

Can I take B2 without first passing B1?

DELE exams certify the level attempted; the exam information does not make a lower-level diploma a prerequisite. Use the receiving institution's requirement and an official-model diagnostic to choose.

What score is needed to pass?

At both B1 and B2, reading plus writing must reach 30/50 and listening plus speaking must reach 30/50.
